Perry Group takes control of their supply chain

COVID-19 brought significant challenges such as delayed overseas supply chains and the ability to predict buying behaviour. Multiple lockdowns and unpredictable government decisions disrupted, slowed, or even completely stopped the flow of finished goods. This led to many businesses having to rethink their supply chain. (ONS 2022) Business insights and conditions survey reported that 30% of businesses in the manufacturing, wholesale, and retail trade experienced global supply chain disruption.

The Perry Group, the leading supplier of gate hardware and ironmongery in the UK, had a plan to overcome their reliance within their supply chain over a year before the pandemic began. However disruption caused by the pandemic accelerated their plans, which was a calculated and wise decision made by the board of directors. Fast forward to the present day, the group now owns a Manufacturing Export Company based in greater Noida, India with over 50,000 sq. feet of warehousing and manufacturing capabilities, sending FCL shipments around the world.

The factory is now producing over 1000 SKUs, shipping on average 8 x 40 foot containers each month and has significant capacity to grow.

Many benefits come with this new venture for the Perry Group, not least its enhanced manufacturing capabilities allowing for bespoke products and tools to be developed to the exact requirements of their customers, as well as opening the doors to many new products and ranges that previously were not viable, such as sheep hurdles, metal gates, laser cut wall art much more. All items are produced across a total of 45 of machines capable of moulding, pressing, casting, forming, thread rolling, laser cutting and more. The factory also has its own finishing plant for powder coating, electro-plating and galvanising products and has developed a superior weather resistant coating which provides products with a minimum of 10 years rust-free life outside when applied. The company is currently developing new products with this premium finish ready to launch for 2023.

Moreover, utilising the company’s existing distribution into their Midlands based headquarters, they can offer customers reduced minimum order quantities by merging customer’s shipments onto their own containers, giving them a greater advantage over other manufacturers, where the requirements don’t satisfy a FCL.

India has been the world leader in ironmongery and outdoor hardware products for over a decade, however, the gap between China and India is still significant when it comes to manufacturing prowess in other areas, but with the loss of productivity due to the pandemic and political uncertainty of China and its government, many companies are looking to shift their requirements to other countries, such as Tech giant Apple deciding to move some production of apple products from China to India due to various factors that also included COVID- 19 disruptions.
The future for India’s manufacturing industry is promising, making it an ideal location to base Perry’s factory.
